Advanced Screening Of A Quiet Place With Hoyts Cinemas

On Friday 30th March, I was lucky enough to attend a special advanced screening at Hoyts Belconnen of the scary new movie A Quiet Place starring The Office's John Krasinski and his wife The Devil Wears Prada's Emily Blunt.

Finding a creepy horror movie is getting harder and harder to do. Instead of relying on jump scares and gore, moviegoers are now looking for the suspense of a thriller with a unique new horror story. Reboots are dime a dozen, so the chance to get to see a new story with a new big bad is to be savoured like a fine wine, and A Quiet Place is definitely one to be savoured.

The movie not only stars John Krasinski and his wife as a couple powerhouse, the movie was also directed by everyone's favourite jerk Jim Halpert, jumping A Quiet Place into the same suspenseful league as By The Sea, a dramatic movie directed by and starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie that was filmed on their own honeymoon. It proves power couples can slay.

The story centres around a family of four who are living in an apocalypse style abandoned world, but instead of being hunted by classic zombies, vampires or werewolves they are actually hiding from blind alien-like creatures who hunt via sound - meaning everything they have to do to survive has to be silent.

Have you ever tried to be completely silent? It's practically impossible. You starting breathing harder, touching things can be deafening and giving birth like the poor pregnant Emily Blunt had to do? Yeah that would be downright impossible. The family survive by walking on sand to remain silent, using egg timers and loud water as distractions.

The constant lack of dialogue and sound - while the movie's main point - is unnerving, meaning that A Quiet Place adds to the suspense and the movie's thriller aspect by the simple addition of something that is so natural to life. It makes the plot line and the action intense in a way that is not seen with other horror movies today. I'm not a jumper in horror movies but this movie actually successfully made me jump. If you want a real scare, get yourself to the movies and watch A Quiet Place - just don't choose loud movie snacks when you go!

A Quiet Place is out in Australian cinemas everywhere on 5 April 2018
