The Ultimate Face of Horror Death Match - The Slashers

The late 70's, 80's and 90's completely reinvigerated the horror genre with a big change in the game. Unlike the supernatural creatures with the heart of gold that dominated the silver screen of the 1930's to the 1950's, these new faces of horror were bloody, brutal, and undescriminate. It was the birth of the slasher.

When you think of slasher horror movies there are a few central characters who come into mind, and I think it's about time we pitt them against each other in a big Freddy vs Jason, Alien vs Prediator sort of way. Welcome to the second Ultimate Face of Horror Death Match.

*Please note, many of these horror movies below have had sequels attached or reboot/remakes that have followed on from the story from the naughties onwards. These have not been included and only includes the movies of the 70's, 80's and the 90's.

Freddy Krueger - 1984

Starring: Robert Englund as the terrifying Frederick Charles "Freddy" Krueger in Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Sequels: A New Nightmare, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Final Nightmare, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child.

Signature Look: Freddy wears a red and green striped sweater, a dark brown fedora, loose black trousers and has both a bladed glove on one hand and scarred burned skin.

Motivation: It is revealed in the movies that Freddy is a child killer who is eventually captured and let off on a technicality. When the parents of the town find out he is set free they burn him alive in the boiler room of the school where he used to keep his victims. He lives on as an evil spirit that returns to seek revenge on the children of the parents who killed him.

Death Count: 34 deaths in his series

Jason Voorhees - 1980

Starring: Warrington Gillette took on the role as Adult Jason after the events of Friday the 13t but was taken over by Richard Brooker.

Sequels: Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th Part 3, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Friday the 13th Part VI: The New Blood, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhatten, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday.

Signature Look: Jason is deformed and hides his face behind an old decaying hockey mask. He is large, bald. and usually wearing heavy weighted clothes,

Motivation: Jason drowns at a summer camp called Camp Crystal Lake and his mother, the cook of the camp, blames the camp counsellors for his death and seeks revenge on them. When his mother is killed at the end of Friday the 13th, it is revealed that Jason was never killed and returns to seek revenge on those who killed his mother, before he simply returns to stalk campers and hikers who are around the Camp.

Death Count: 110 deaths in the entire 80's - 90's series - and that is including the 2 movies Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th: A New Beginning in which he doesn't kill anyone!

Michael Myers - 1978

Starring: Many actors have played Michael Myers throughout the series that catapaulted Jamie Lee Curtis to stardom, but Tyler Mane is the only one who has protrayed him multiple times.

Sequels: Halloween 2, Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers, and Halloween: H20

Signature Look: Michael Myers wears what seems to be a pair of very dirty mechanic style coveralls and a horrible grey-skin like mask.

Motivation: Michael Myers is simply crazy. As a young boy he kills his siter and then fifteen years later returns to his hometime to embark on a killing spree which continues throughout the series.

Death Count: A whopping 68 deaths in the series

Ghostface - 1996

Starring: The character behind the mask of Ghostface changes throughout Wes Craven's masterpiece Scream but the voice is played by Roger Jackson.

Sequels: Scream 2, and Scream 3, which makes it in by a hairline as even though it was made in the year 2000, it has the classic feel of the 90's movies.

Signature Look: Completely black robed and hooded outfit with a white screaming mask.

Motivation: Poor Sidney Prescott seems to have just made everyone angry for no apparent reason. Sidney and her friends are targeted because her mother is a well known slut around the small town she lives in, and even though her mother is dead there are several people who want to get revenge on her for various reasons, and the best way to do that is to take it out on her daughter - right?

Death Count: 21 deaths in total

Leatherface - 1974

Starring: Originally played by Gunnar Hansen in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the character of Leatherface has been protrayed by many different actors.

Sequels: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation.

Signature Look: Leatherface's name comes from the fact that he wears masks made of human skin and is never seen without his trusty chainsaw!

Motivation: Leatherface's main motivation is that he takes orders from his older family members, who are a derranged cannibalistic family who work in back country butchery. Like his family, he is hungry for human flesh and kills his victims to feast on them.

Death Count: 12 kills not including the naughties movies.

And the Winner is.... Jason Voorhees!

It was a tough competition for the Slasher's Ultimate Face of Horror Death Match, considering Leatherface is a crazy cannibal and Freddy Krueger is arguably more famous than Jason is, but Jason came out on top for several reasons:

The main reason is the motivation behind Jason's killing spree being revenge driven, but unlike the other vengeful serial killers like Ghostface and Freddy Kruger Jason then just starts killing for no apparent reason. He's not neccessarily killing because he is crazy, like Michael Myers is, or because he wants to eat them like Leatherface does, but is killing because it is basically all he knows. There isn't a lot of reason to the slaughter Jason inflicts on his victims and that makes him the most dangerous killer of all.

Jason'a death total for the whole movie series also comes in at 110 which is a whopping 42 more deaths than even the closest kill total of Michael Myer's. He is well known for being the most blood-thirsty killer with the most knotches on his belt and so even though Freddy is more famous, Jason is way more famous in the kill count regard.

And also, Jason is arguably the strongest of the killers as well. Freddy can only kill in people's dreams, rendering him useless in the real world like we saw in the naughties movie Freddy Vs Jason. While many of the characters do return miraciously for sequels in the series, Jason is well-known for being the one that is impossible to kill. This makes him unstoppable, unpredictable, and the winner of the Ultimate Face of Horror Death Match.
