Iconography: Beelzebub
He sounds like a character from Beetlegeuse, but Beelzebub is no smack talking poltergeist. With a name derived from a Philistine God, worshipped sometimes as Ekron, and associated with the Canaanite God Baal, Beezlebub is a predominantly Christian icon, who is sometimes referred to as the Devil and Satan. In Christian demonology, Beelzebub is actually one of the seven princes of Hell, and is second to Lucifer, the actual Devil.
In fact, Beelzebub is actually directly referenced in the bible in Mark 3:22, where the scribes accuse Jesus of driving demons out by the power of Beelzebub, which seeing as he was a demonic entity, was the scribes of the time accusing and insulting Jesus Christ during his time of miracles.
Beelzebub is actually translated from the word Baal Zebub, which means "Lord of the Flies". He gives an air of pestilence to the seven kingdoms of Hell with flies playing a large focus in the imagery that details him as a malignant spirit who can even take the form of flies. Other than his flying powers, he is also said to be the prince of false gods, who causes demons to be worshipped amongst men, excite priests to lust, cause jealousies in cities and murders, bring on war, and cause destruction through tyrants. His name, and his abilities to incite the turning of faith in humans, meant that Beelzebub was mentioned often during the Salem Witch Trials, having been pointed as being the devil that supplicated those accused.
He is a powerful entity, a fallen angel, and has forty nine servants under his command.
There have been many pop culture references to Beezlebub over time, one of the most unique takes being considered as the overarching evil entity that seeks control and creates human depravity in the novel and TV show of "Lord of the Flies", which is about a group of children who are marooned and forced to survive. A more literal translation is the character in the TV Show The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in which he is a Groot-like character of Hell who can control flies.
