The Best Cabin In The Woods Movies
Cabins in the woods are an extremely popular setting for a horror movie because they are usually very visually appealing, extreme deaths can occur without alerting the neighbours, and the idea of being stalked in the woods at night is pretty damn terrifying with the amount of wild animals that could be out ready to make a meal of you.
This theme has been very well utilised amongst horror movies, and I thought I would put together a little list for you of some of the best cabin in the woods themed movies out there.
The Cabin in the Woods
You can't talk about a cabin in the woods without talking about Joss Wheden's masterpiece. Part comedy, part satire, part horror, The Cabin in the Woods takes on the usual genre of five friends hanging out in a cabin in the woods during break, but turns it on its head as an elaborate set up by a mysterious laboratory underneath the cabin, who use the tried and true classic as a sacrificial ritual to 'The Ancient Ones'. Chaos erupts on every screen as the characters realise the true nature of the cabin and seek to save their lives.
Evil Dead / The Evil Dead
One of the first horror movies that popularised the cabin in the woods theme was definitely the Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi 80's classic The Evil Dead and its sequels and reboot. When a group of friends holiday at a cabin in the woods they uncover a book bound in human flesh and inked in blood that sets off a terrifying deadite curse that takes over the friends one by one. The original film is an absolute classic, but the reboot is also a great take on the cabin in the woods theme but with the horror turned up to eleven.
I Spit On Your Grave
I Spit on Your Grave was listed as one of the most horrifying movies I have ever watched due to the incredible acting and real life horror that took place in this film. When a writer retreats to the woods to get to work on her latest novel she comes under attack of a brutal gang rape from a group of thugs terrorising the area. Left for dead, naked, battered and alone, the aspiring writer works up the courage to seek revenge on her attackers in some of the most explicit carnage I have ever seen!
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil
Starring the hilarious Alan Tudyk, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is a comedy take off of the cabin in the woods theme that could give Joss Wheden a run for his money. Lovable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on holidays in their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken as murderers and kidnappers by a group of preppy college students who take it on themselves to save their 'kidnapped' friend, but with disastrous consequences that only help further Tucker and Dale's image as chainsaw-wielding killers.
Hush
Similar to I Spit on Your Grave without the rapey vibes, Hush is about a deaf writer lives in a remote country home and is preyed upon by a mask-wearing killer who is attacking people in the area. Having to live without hearing the killers attack, the writer sets it upon herself to stay alive by any means necessary and uses her super-sensitive other senses to take down the killer once and for all!
