Why We Should Lean In To The Mean Girls Halloween Costume Stereotype

Nobody described female Halloween costumes better than Lindsay Lohan's character Cady in the iconic Mean Girls. The home school student experiencing her first Halloween said, "In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it. The hard core girls usually just wear some form of lingerie and animal ears."

I'm not going to lie - Cady Haron got it right. When it comes to Halloween, it's a perfect time of the year to dress a mixture of slutty because the 'it' girls of the world still want to look hot when they dress up in costume - in fact, even more so because you can get really out of the box with it.

Halloween costumes are usually made up of several different styles and types of people. There are the ones who go all out, who don't mind wearing creepy masks, putting on a full clown suit to look like Pennywise, and have no issues going dressed as similarly as Cady's Halloween character as an "ex-wife". Let's face it, these people are fucking awesome. They don't give a shit about what you think - they are dressed to the nines as one of their favourite characters and they look awesome. It's Halloween after all! Then there are the types of people who hate dressing up completely, like Jeff Winger in Community and Oz in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who put in little to no effort. They wear a name tag that says "God" or say they are dressed up as themselves. Honestly, it's boring, it makes you a terrible party-goer and I don't want to know you as a person. #sorrynotsorry.

Then there are the type who want to dress up, and will usually go for a very hetro-normative form of costume that accentuates their good features and makes the wearer look attractive. These are the people who will dress up as nurses, Little Red Riding Hood, cowboys and vampires. They're in costume, but they look good doing it. This is usually where I sit, with my short blood-stained Carrie dress and tiara or my blonde wig and wedding dress as Tiffany from Bride of Chucky. Then there are the ones - the really really attractive people on this Earth - who know they are hot and want you to know it too. They want to show it off. These are the Mean Girls. These are the hard core lingerie wearers who look hot as fuck and are wearing the most simplest of accessories to legitimise their costumes ("I'm a mouse, duh!")

Honestly, I love these kinds of slutty costumes. People who are concerned about how they look will put in a lot of effort at a costume party, even if it is a simple Superman themed bodysuit that kind of defeats the purpose, but also looks super hot. These people are atleast dressed up. Sure they are dressed up in catsuits, lingerie and bustiers, but this is not their usual outfits. They are in costume, even if its only a tiny bit of costume, and I say go for it!

We need to lean in to accepting the stereotype of having women and men dressed in sexy outfits with weirdly unspecific animal ears because they have made the effort to get dressed up! And they look banging while they are doing it, so let them! It's the Halloween haters who don't dress up that we need to be addressing - not the people who enjoy themselves and look good doing it.

Plus, if you want to go with the animal ears idea it also makes a super classy theme for a party too. As Lauren Conrad proved in her blog post, you can be dressed as an animal, looking great doing it, and still be a glamorous individual for doing it.

So what costume or lingerie are you donning to accentuate your good-lookingness this Halloween?
